Improving your home page
Your home page is often the front door to your website, so make sure that it's welcoming!
Here are 3 common mistakes businesses make with their home page:
- Too much content
- All about yourself or your sevices
- Dull, boring
The general consensus for how long you have to capture the attention of your visitor, is around 3 - 5 seconds. If after that you have yet to capture the attention of your visitor, the chances are, you never will. So keep your content short and succinct.
Another thing to consider: We are all now spending more time browsing the internet on our mobile devices than with our personal computers. A home page introduction that is only 2 lines long on a desktop monitor, could easily span well over 6 on a mobile phone. That's too much.
Your home page should be identifying your visitors needs first and foremost, so don't immediately go into details about yourself or your services, save that information for your other pages.
Okay, here are a few more pointers:
- Keep your content short and direct
- Identify the need of your visitor straight away
- Explain your unique selling points, but be quick about it!
- Consider your keywords (SEO)
- Look at your website on your mobile phone
These are the basic things you can do yourself to improve your home page.
But most of all, be cool, be unique, be fun or inspirational, and be engaging. Succeed in doing that and you can be sure that your audience will stick around for much longer, and the longer, the better.
